A Rising Nation: Ethics, Boundaries & Leadership in African Spiritual Communities What does ethical spiritual leadership look like—and how do you recognize when a healer, practitioner, teacher, or spiritual leader has crossed the line? A Rising Nation is an essential class on ethics, accountability, boundaries, leadership, and community safety within African-centered spiritual and holistic healing spaces. This class is designed for both practitioners and community members. Practitioners will explore the standards and responsibilities that come with serving others, while community members will learn how to recognize ethical leadership, identify red flags, establish boundaries, and better protect themselves when receiving spiritual or holistic services. Topics include practitioner-client and student relationships, sexual boundaries, confidentiality, honest communication, personal discipline and self-work, relationships among spiritual leaders, the protection of children and elders, accountability, ethical use of spiritual authority, and the qualities required of strong community leadership. You’ll also learn practical ways to protect yourself when working with healers and practitioners—including questions to ask before a session, understanding consent and physical touch, recognizing controlling or inappropriate behavior, and knowing when it is time to stop, speak up, or remove yourself from an unsafe environment. A Rising Nation challenges us to build the kind of African spiritual and healing communities we want future generations to inherit—communities rooted in truth, integrity, discipline, accountability, protection, and ethical leadership. Because rebuilding our traditions requires more than reclaiming ancestral knowledge. We must also restore the standards that govern how that knowledge and power are used.
